And economy for centuries  it provides livelihood to millions of weavers and artisans across the country, especially in rural areas however, with the advent of industrialization. And the increasing popularity of cheaper, machine-made textiles, the handloom industry has been struggling to survive.

Handloom weaving is an ancient practice that has been an integral part of India’s rich cultural heritage for centuries. The intricate designs, vibrant colors, and quality of handloom fabrics are unmatched. And they continue to be popular among people all over the world. However, the handloom sector in India has faced numerous challenges over the years, including competition from power looms, lack of infrastructure, and limited access to markets.

To address these issues and promote the development of the handloom sector, the Government of India launched the National Handloom Development Programme (NHDP) in 1983. The NHDP aims to provide comprehensive support to handloom weavers. And their communities by providing them with the necessary infrastructure, technology, and marketing assistance.

One of the key objectives of the NHDP is to improve the quality of handloom products. And increase their competitiveness in the market to achieve this, the programme provides financial assistance to weavers for the purchase of raw materials, modern weaving equipment, and other tools. Additionally, the NHDP also provides training to weavers on various aspects of handloom weaving, such as design development, dyeing, and finishing.

Another important aspect of the NHDP is the creation of handloom clusters, which are groups of weavers located in the same area. These clusters serve as a platform for weavers to share knowledge and resources, as well as to collectively market their products. The NHDP provides financial assistance for the establishment of common facilities in these clusters, such as dyeing and finishing units, design studios, and marketing centers.

The NHDP also focuses on the welfare of handloom weavers and their families. The programme provides financial assistance for the construction of houses, healthcare, and education for the children of weavers. Additionally, the NHDP has introduced a number of social security schemes for weavers, such as life insurance, pension, and maternity benefits.
