The Sahitya Akademi has its headquarters in New Delhi. And has regional offices in different parts of the country. It consists of a General Council. An Executive Board, and a number of advisory committees for each of the Indian languages recognized by it. The General Council, consisting of eminent writers. And scholars from different parts of the country, is the highest policy-making body of the Akademi.

The Sahitya Akademi organizes a number of literary programs, conferences, seminars. And workshops throughout the year to promote Indian literature and encourage creative writing.
